Sir Alex Ferguson received a huge £500k cash injection after his horse Spirit Dancer was victorious in Bahrain.

The former Manchester United manager was in Bahrain on Friday (November 17) to watch Spirit Dancer, the horse he co-owns, in action in the Bahrain International trophy which is the kingdom's most prestigious race. Ridden by jockey Oisin Orr, Spirit Dancer destroyed his fellow racers by winning the race by two and a quarter lengths.

While money isn't the motivating factor for the 86-year-old, the half a million quid added nicely to his staggering £56million net worth, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

“That’s the best ever, without doubt, the best ever," Ferguson said after the victory. "Against the pedigrees of all those horses with their form. It was fantastic, I couldn't believe it.

“I was terrified [of the opposition]. Godolphin had five horses in the race. That was great. I am so proud. I said to the jockey, ‘Remember, he’s a Frankel'.”

Dancer's victory was particularly impressive as he defeated the John and Thady Gosden-trained Israr. After the race, a jubilant Orr also said: “I got a lovely sit the whole race and when I turned into the straight I couldn’t believe how well he was going.”

The Scotsman has long been a horse racing fan. He has admitted to now owning 32 horses. With his management days long behind him, he now has plenty of time to dedicate to his equine friends. "To be honest, the route I got into racing was through my father, he was a great horse fan," he said in an interview with Racing TV.

"I didn’t really take it up, in terms of ownership at least, until 1997/98 when there was an international break and I said to my wife 'Why don’t we go to the racing?' 'Where did you get that from', she said. We went to Cheltenham and I got hooked on it. We bought a horse with Jack Berry and from there on, I now have 32 horses! It is a fantastic sport in terms of a release for me away from football."

His trip to Bahrain was his first since 1986 - the same year he became Manchester United manager.
