A 28-year-old was killed shortly before noon Friday in a wreck with a big rig on Highway 84 West near the Sportsplex.
Nathan Odell Hatten of Taylorsville was driving a 2005 Toyota Camry that was attempting to cross from the south side of the highway at the Sportsplex to Flynt Road, Laurel police said.
The Camry made it across the eastbound lanes but was slammed into on the passenger side as Hatten tried to cross the westbound lanes. The Camry was knocked at least 100 yards into the median of Highway 84 near the Natatorium while the Collins-based Sonny Farms Grain Haulers truck jackknifed off the shoulder of the highway about 50 yards away.
Eastbound traffic was stopped for about an hour while crews worked to process the scene. LPD Capt. Michael Reaves said the investigation is ongoing.
The unidentified driver of the grain hauler was taken to South Central Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries, but those were believed to be minor if any.
On Wednesday morning, 20 vehicles were involved in a wreck farther west on the same highway. Fog was heavy in the morning when a log truck struck a car and rolled over, spilling its load. There were no life-threatening injuries reported.
