Baseus Magnetic Power Bank Review: No MagSafe? No Problem!

Apples MagSafe is a game changer for power banks, but since it's proprietary tech, other smartphone makers can't copy it for their devices. While many manufacturers make MagSafe power banks, you cant charge a non-MagSafe phone on them unless its lying flat. So, Baseus made a power bank that will solve this problem.

Key Takeaways

  • Baseus Magnetic Power Bank is a game changer for non-MagSafe devices, with its built-in USB-C cable and an extra USB-C port.
  • The power bank can fully recharge an iPhone Pro Max and has a MagSafe-compatible wireless charger.
  • The power bank may cause overheating if you have a thick case, but it can recharge the iPhone to 100% capacity and has pass-through charging capability.

A Power Bank With a “Tail”

The Baseus Magnetic Power Bank is a handy wireless battery bank with a built-in short USB-C cable. It comes in at 214 grams (7.55oz), slightly lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s 252 grams (8.9oz). Furthermore, it measures 11.2 x 7.1 x 2.0 cm (4.41 x 2.80 x 0.79 inches) and fits nicely on my palm. Its built-in cable is 14.4 cm (5.67 inches) long, although it has a port for securing the USB-C connector when not in use, effectively halving its length when stowed.

Aside from the wireless charging capability and built-in cable, the power bank also has a single USB-C port for plugging in your own cable. That means you can still use the power bank if you damage the built-in cable, thus reducing e-waste.

The Baseus Magnetic Power Bank has four indicator lights—three white LEDs to indicate its charge level and an orange one to show if the wireless charger is turned on. This is a bit unconventional, though, as most users are used to four LED lights to indicate remaining power, and a fifth to show its wireless status.

Fits Nicely Behind a Pro Max-sized Phone

Despite its weight and dimensions, the power bank doesn’t add much heft to the iPhone when I use it—even with my thick Spigen case. It also holds my iPhone securely, so I don’t have to worry about my phone flying off while I’m wirelessly charging it and moving about.

However, I did run into one issue while charging my phone—I received an overheat warning when I charged the phone from empty to 80%, thus pausing the charging process. My thick case must have affected the phone’s cooling, but it was my first time experiencing this.

I removed my phone from its case and checked the phone and power bank’s surface temperature after this happened, and I received a reading of 41°C (105.8°F) on both devices. Despite the iPhone’s safety systems kicking in and stopping the phone from charging, both devices still felt comfortable to hold, even though it was a bit warm.

Recharges the iPhone 14 Pro Max to 100% Capacity and Then Some

The Baseus Magnetic Power Bank has a 10,000mAh capacity. However, that doesn’t mean you can use all of that to power your device. After all, you get some environmental losses, like heat. Furthermore, the power bank only has an energy conversion rate of around 75%, so you'll only get around 7,500mAh out of it.

Nevertheless, this should be able to charge the iPhone 14 Pro Max fully and have a little left over for a few more bars. I tested this by draining my iPhone two days in a row and using the power bank to recharge it. I got 100% on my iPhone on the first day and only 13% the second time before the power bank drained.

While this was a bit less than what you would expect, it’s still reasonable, as I just used wireless charging, which is less efficient than wired charging.

Three Hours to Fill and Another Three Hours to Drain

Once I’d drained the power bank, I plugged it into a 140-watt USB-C charger port. However, its maximum charging input is 18 watts, meaning refilling the power bank took about 2 hours and 52 minutes.

On the other hand, it has a 30-watt output capacity, so it can charge an iPhone from empty to full in a little over two hours if you use a cable. Wireless charging is still limited to 15 watts, so using this will take your iPhone longer to fill. Nevertheless, the Baseus Magnetic Power Bank is great for topping up your device throughout the day.

Multiple Device Charging Is… Weird

Another useful feature of this magnetic power bank is pass-through charging. So, if you don’t have a Lightning cable but your phone has MagSafe, you simultaneously charge the power bank and your phone. That way, you’ll wake up with a full iPhone and power bank in the morning.

And because it can charge devices in three different ways, you can use the Baseus Magnetic Power Bank to recharge multiple devices simultaneously. However, it’s not straightforward because simultaneous charging doesn’t work in some combinations.

You can charge two devices simultaneously if you use the built-in cable and the USB port (with your own cable). You can also do the same with the USB-C port and wireless charger. However, if you use the magnetic charger and plug in another device with the built-in cable, it will turn off the wireless charger. Maybe it does that to save power, as the iPhone will disable MagSafe when you plug it in via a wired charger.

A Power Bank for Everything You Have

Since many devices now use USB-C ports for power and charging, having a power bank with a built-in USB-C cable makes sense. That way, you can recharge your gear even if you leave your USB-C cable behind. It also has magnetic wireless charging, allowing you to power both MagSafe and other wireless charging devices.

If you need to power your old gear (or happen to break the built-in cable), you can use the USB port to recharge your micro USB and Lightning electronics. And while I wish Baseus added an extra LED bulb or even a small LCD screen to note the remaining charge, the benefit you get from the Baseus Magnetic Power Bank far outweighs these minor niggles.
