Gwen Stefani, who was the lead singer and co-founder of the rock group No Doubt in the 1980s has said she now can’t listen to some of their songs.
The music star helped start the band in 1986 and they performed for nine years until they had their breakthrough with the 1995 album Tragic Kingdom. The record gave No Doubt some of their biggest hits, including Don’t Speak and the TikTok-viral Just A Girl. Gwen left the group in 2004 to have a solo career, but now she’s going back to her musical roots. But that doesn’t mean her earlier work doesn’t fill her with “regret” … or make her want to throw up in her mouth.
Gwen Stefani says No Doubt song almost makes her ‘throw up in her mouth’
Appearing on Audacity Music’s Audacity Check-In show last week (February 16), Gwen Stefani shared the No Doubt songs which she isn’t the fondest of. She went as far as to say one makes her want to “throw up in her mouth.”
“I can’t listen to a lot of the songs because they speak so clearly to me. And it’s like, you know, you have regrets, you have mistakes you’ve made. And most of the songs are about that,” she said.
“If I do Ex-Girlfriend, even when I say it, I almost throw up in my mouth.”
Ex-Girlfriend was released in 2000 and was written about her former partner Gavin Rossdale, the lead singer of the rock band Bush, whom the 54-year-old was married to from 2022 until 2005.
“Just knowing exactly where I was in that moment to write that song and what I know now? It’s just like, ‘Oh, my God.’ It just brings you right back,” she explained.
Despite feeling queasy listening to older No Doubt tracks, she revealed she still likes to perform them live.
The celebrity added: “There’s lots of times you’ll be on tour and doing the repetitive songs but it’s not the songs. You’re with these new people every night and they’re receiving the songs. I can’t believe I was chosen to have this life because it’s such an incredible way to express yourself and to know yourself. And the songs do that.”
