A Lord Of The Rings fan fiction writer has lost a copyright lawsuit over the publication of his sequel to the hit film, and the consequences were disastrous.
US-based author Demetrious Polychron published a follow-up to the hit movie and book series in 2022, titled The Fellowship of the King. His original plan was great news for fans, as the author planned to write a seven-part series based on the global phenomenon. However, a run-in with Amazon changed it all.

Author’s Lord of The Rings sequel ‘must be destroyed’ in copyright lawsuit
After the release of his book, the author attempted to sue the Tolkien estate and Amazon over their spin-off TV series, The Rings of Power, released in September 2022.
Demetrious claimed this infringed the copyright of his book, and tried to take legal action, however, it backfired.
The US court dismissed his case, and they decided that his work was the one that had breached copyright.
The Tolkien estate then filed a separate lawsuit to try and block The Fellowship of the King, and destroy all copies, and it looks like the court was in their favor.
Polychron has now been banned from writing any more novels based on the late Tolkien’s work, and his book has now been banned from distribution. All copies of the sequel must also be destroyed.
The estate’s UK solicitor, Steven Maier of Maier Blackburn, said: “This is an important success for the Tolkien estate, which will not permit unauthorized authors and publishers to monetize JRR Tolkien’s much-loved works in this way,” [via The Guardian].
Fans don’t have to wait long for a new movie

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is set to arrive in theaters in December 2024, and is an animated movie.
The Lord of the Rings OG trilogy star Miranda Otto will return for her role as Éowyn, the narrator of the exciting new blockbuster.
Brian Cox will also be on board, voicing Helm Hammerhand, the King of Rohan.
The film was originally planned to be released in April of next year, however, delays meant production had to be pushed back. We’re yet to receive a trailer, but we’re hoping to see one soon!
